What is IPL/ laser hair removal?

You may have heard of the term permanent hair reduction or Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) or laser hair removal – what is it and what results can be achieved?

In order to reduce and eliminate hair growth, the hair follicle must be destroyed.

Permanent hair removal means that the hairs destroyed by the heat emitted by the light or laser will not grow back.

Many studies have been carried out on the subject. To find out more, go to http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/ and search for “IPL hair removal”.

Home use IPL machines - do they work?

Beautylase do not advocate the use of home use IPLs as they cannot compare with the efficiency of a professional system.

When choosing the strength of the setting, the specialist practitioner has to determine a setting that is at the same time strong enough to cause damage to the hair without overheating the skin.

Only an experienced and trained specialist practitioner can carry out a treatment safely and effectively. Typically, a good result is a slight swelling and redenning of the skin around the hair follicle and the smell of burning hair. At Beautylase, we will analyse your skin type (phototype) and will observe how you skin reacts to different settings during your patch test in order determine a safe but efficient level for your treatment.

Am I suitable for treatment?

Melanin is the pigment that gives skin and hair its colour. The level of melanin in the skin determines each and everyone’s skin type.

White skin with dark hair is an ideal combination for IPL hair removal.

Darker skin (Type IV) will be treated at a lower energy level as the skin will also absorb some of the light and transform it into heat.

Tanned skin will not be treated until the suntan has faded in order to avoid any superficial burns. Fake tans and sunbeds are prohibited during treatment.

During your Consultation, the IPL/Laser technician will establish your skin type (Phototype) using the Fitzpatrick benchmark. This is because the level of melanin in the skin will determine the strength of the setting which will be used to carry out hair removal on a person. Settings may vary between different zones of the body.

Fair hair and red hair cannot be treated efficiently of IPL/Laser hair removal.
Beautylase cannot treat skintypes V.

Skintype, referred to as phototype, and its reaction to sun exposure is taken into consideration in order to set the laser to be efficient but not damaging to the skin. Please click here to judge your own phototype and suitability.

As a part of our treatment protocol, we have to treat the hair when it is in its anagen phase of growth.
